Background:
Breast ptosis is a cosmetic problem that affects most women over time. In order to correct this deformity, mastopexy with or without augmentation is used as a surgical option. In this review, we looked at our complication and re-operative rates with these operations to examine for risk factors.
Methods:
A retrospective chart review was performed, looking at the outcomes of 5 surgeons from two private practice groups with mastopexy +/- augmention. Patients age, co-morbidities, type of mastopexy perform, length of follow-up, complications, and re-operative rates were collected and analyzed for risk factors leading to increased complication rates.
Results:
107 women underwent bilateral mastopexy and 16 underwent unilateral procedures (congenital or breast cancer related asymmetry). 16 had prior augmentations, of these 13 had implants replaced. 37 had mastopexy with primary augmentation. 21 total patients were post bariatric surgery. Surgically, 80.5% had a Wise pattern design used, 13% vertical, and 6.5% periareolar. There were 51 total complications in 46 patients for 37.4% complication rate. 84.0% of the complications were minor skin issues. 57.1% of bariatric patients and 46% of augmentation patients had complications. 16 patients required revisions, with 10 requiring return to the operating room and 6 local procedures. 100% of patients going to the OR had implant related complications.
Conclusion:
Mastopexy is a safe and reliable surgery for correction of breast ptosis. Combining this operation with augmentation increases the need for future operative revisions.
