Facial Analysis with 3D Imaging after Injectable Tissue Augmentation

Background: Setting expectations is vital to the patient consultation for facial filler, and it is well known that edema at the injection site will obscure the final volume increase. Our study aims to compare volume injected versus observed volume augmentation measured with 3D imaging shortly after injection in patients seeking facial filler and augmentation of the mid face and lips.

Methods: 3D pictures of the patient were taken before and after augmentation with filler using a Vectra 3D camera. Juviderm Voluma XC was used for midface augmentation and Juvaderm Ultra XC was used for lip augmentation. Volume used and location of filler was recorded. Vectra imaging software was used to calculate observed changes in facial volume.

Results: 22 patients were enrolled in the study. 10 received malar augmentation, and 11 received lip augmentation. Face volumes before and after were compared at an average of 39 min (SD = ±14.5 min) after injection. In lips there was a 43% greater increase in observed volume compared to the volume injected (p-value = 0.0042). In the malar area there was a 64% greater increase in volume on the right and 60% greater increase on the left (p-value = 0.020 and 0.0531, respectively).

Conclusions:
In our study we found a greater increase in observed volume in the lips (43%) and malar area (60-64%) compared to volume of filler used. This information is useful for counseling patients on the expected edema from filler in these areas.
