The annual ACAPS Boot Camp model allows for a rapid, standardized, high-yield curriculum delivered in a condensed period of time. We present resident survey data from the 2019 ACAPS boot camp experience.

In July of 2019, 70 residents (58 integrated/12 independent) participated in five regional boot camp course locations. Under IRB approval, participants completed pre and post course online surveys. Descriptive data was collected and analyzed from all five regional sites.

Integrated participants reported more comfort/ knowledge with preoperative and post-operative patient management (72%, 74%). 97% of residents reported improvement in understanding the field of plastic surgery. Highest scores of improved knowledge were reflected in the areas of facial trauma (90%), facial fracture plating (93%), and cleft lip/palate (88%). Residents reported improvement in knowledge of hand anatomy (77%), management of hand trauma/call (87%), and hand exam (87%). Residents reported lower rates of improvement in understanding cosmetic procedures (74%) and medical photography (40%).

Topics such as management of face/hand trauma were extremely well-received, where as aesthetic surgery/medical photography were reported as less beneficial. Study limitations exist, as survey questions were modified over the years and therefore not all the data is standardized for analysis. As we move forward in this era of virtual meetings, future directions would include a cost analysis of the boot camp, so that maximal participant benefit is balanced by sustainable and cost-effective delivery of education.
