The aesthetic qualities of the lips and perioral region have been described in detail by several authors, underscoring their importance within the overall facial aesthetic, and their consequence vis-à-vis facial harmony.
The majority of patients with perioral senescence demonstrate a loss of volume or fullness not just in the vermillion but in the cutaneous aspects of the lips as well.
We present a specific technique for utilizing hyaluronic acid-based fillers for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate vertical perioral rhytids. Our technique evolved from the senior author's (SO) use of autologous fat augmentation for perioral rejuvenation. This painless technique has produced consistent results without palpable ridging, and has led us to conclude that dermal fillers still represent a safe, inexpensive and viable strategy when used with proper technique.
