This study aims to assess the baseline quality of life (QOL) of breast reconstruction patients, and compare it to other plastic surgery patients.

From June 2012 through November 2013, reconstruction patients (group 1), aesthetic breast patients (group 2) and patients not related to breast (Group 3) answered a validated QOL questionnaire – BreastQ. The questionnaire scores range from 0-100 and evaluate patient QOL. Univariate statistical analysis used SPSS.

182, 70 and 159 questionnaires were answered for groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Mean scores and standard deviation for groups 1, 2 and 3 were: satisfaction with breasts, 56.56 (± 25.33), 28.3 (± 22.25) and 63.59 (±27.02); psychosocial well-being , 69.56 (±17.80), 52.40 (± 16.05) and 75.77 (± 22.61); physical well-being-chest , 79.19 (±15.76), 59.75 (±20.34) and 84.19 (±16.97); physical well-being-abdomen, 88.69(±13.97); 71.09 (± 22.80) and 79.64 (± 21.22); sexual well-being, 54.46(±22.15); 37.65 (± 19.88) and 50.4 (± 23.75), respectively. There were no difference from Group 1 to 3, on breast satisfaction (p=0.081) and sexual well-being (p=0.780). Scores were lower in psychosocial well-being (p=0.025), and physical well-being-chest (p=0.047); and higher in physical well-being-abdomen (p<0.001), in group 1 compared to 3. The patients in Group 2 had lower scores in all domains, compared to 1 and 3.

Pre-operatively, reconstruction patients had similar satisfaction with breasts and sexual well-being when compared to patients unrelated to breast and lower psychological well-being and physical well-being of the chest. Aesthetic breast patients had lower scores in all domains compared to breast reconstruction and non-breast patients.
