Resident cosmetic clinics are an integral part of plastic surgery resident training in cosmetic surgery. A majority of plastic surgery training programs rely on resident cosmetic clinics to provide their residents with experience in cosmetic surgery. These clinics benefit the residency programs, but should not compromise patient care in order to provide education.
All cosmetic procedures performed through the University of Cincinnati resident cosmetic clinic over a period of 2 years were reviewed. Results showed 22 patients elected to have cosmetic procedures performed. The most common operation performed was abdominoplasty. Patient demographics as well as complications, cost and operative times were all recorded and compared to previously researched data. A survey to assess patient satisfaction was also mailed to these 22 patients because it is difficult to assess the outcome of a cosmetic surgery without addressing the patient's satisfaction with the operation. The information gained in this study will help to show the safety and feasibility of resident cosmetic clinics in plastic surgery training as well as characterize patient satisfaction with surgeries performed through the clinic.
