The presentation meets the established conference objectives by addressing a novel technique in performing lateral canthoplasty.

Background: Lateral canthus suspension is a useful adjunct to aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, providing a more youthful, aesthetic position of the lower eyelid. Most lateral canthal suspension techniques are technically difficult, requiring extensive dissection and significant skill for proper execution. We describe a simplified method of canthoplasty using an inferior approach for easy identification of the lateral retinaculum and requiring minimal dissection.
Methods: A retrospective chart review was undertaken for this paper. Inclusion criteria were all consecutive cases from January 2007 to June 2011 done by the senior author (BG) using this new technique. Patients with a follow up of less than 6 months were excluded from the study. Charts were reviewed for indications for operation, and post-operative complications.
Results: 72 patients met inclusion criteria for a total of 141 canthoplasties (3 patients underwent unilateral procedures). 12 of these patients were male. The follow-up period ranged from 6 to 57 months with an average of 18.8 months. Complications were minimal: chemosis was present in 4 cases, dry eyes present in 4, lower lid scarring requiring kenalog injection in 3, lid lag in one, and overcorrection in one. One canthoplasty suture release was performed and one revision was required with eventual satisfaction of all patients. No cases of ectropion or diplopia were noted.
Conclusions: This case series showcases the senior author's method of lateral canthoplasty and demonstrates its safety.
