The objective of this study was to explore public attitude towards breast implant and removal. In lieu of the inherent limitations of Google Trends, the first step was to interrogate and re-establish the correlation between search interest for breast implants and removals and their annual procedures performed for the years 2009 through 2018. Age group stratification was employed to ensure no age group skewed the data, and redundant search terms were included to improve statistical power.
Search volume index (SVI) score of 1-100 was determined for each month for the years January 1, 2009, through December 31, 2018. Annual SVI was calculated by taking the averages of the monthly SVIs. SVI for breast implants was determined by taking the mean annual SVI of BIBA1 "breast implant + breast augmentations" and "breast augmentation + breast implants", while SVI for breast implant removal used the mean annual SVI of "breast implant removal + breast implants removal". Annual procedures data was obtained from American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Spearman and Pearson coefficients were used (GraphPad Prism 8.3.1 and SPSS); significance set to < 0.05.
2014 marked the year that SVI for removals exceeded that of breast augmentation. Significance was found between annual SVI for augmentation and implant removal and removal procedures (p<0.001; p<0.015). Annual SVI for removals significantly correlated with number of total and age-group specific annual removal procedures (p<0.001). Analysis of the percent change from previous year in annual removal procedures by age group did not reveal any procedure dominant age-group.
