Purpose:
Cannabis consumption in the United States has grown exponentially, with 34.5% of persons aged 18-25 reporting marijuana use in the past year. Despite its growing acceptance and prevalence, little is known concerning its overall effect in the operative arena. The purpose of this study is to analyze pre-, intra-, and post-operative effects of isolated cannabis use on elective primary breast augmentation (EPBA).

Methods:
A retrospective analysis of 134 adult females undergoing EPBA was performed between August 2018 and January 2022. Patients hailed from a single-surgeon practice. Variables analyzed included age, body mass index, self-reported cannabis use, tobacco use, associated comorbidities, pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative anesthetics, duration of surgery, and post-operative complications.

Results:
A total of 134 patients were reviewed. Fifty-eight patients (43%) reported cannabis use. No significant differences were found between the groups in intra-operative blood loss, post-operative complication rates, post-operative narcotic use, peri-operative anesthetic requirement or intra-operative anesthetic requirement. Cannabis users were significantly younger (p<0.001, Table 1), and non-substance users elected to have larger breast implants (right p=0.004, left p=0.002).

Conclusion:
No statistically significant difference in adverse events or increase in intra-operative and post-operative medications were identified. Future studies are required to further corroborate these findings.
