A novel mapping tool used to quickly screen potential face transplantation candidates for reconstructive options

We propose a novel prescreening tool for use in the evaluation of potential recipients of facial transplantation. This color map will allow a quick and detailed assessment of future reconstructive options.
We created a map of the face, as well as, donor site morbidity for each potential face transplant recipient The basic template used is that of an anterior-posterior (AP) view of a cartooned drawing of the face with both AP and posterior-anterior (PA) views of cartooned drawings of the body. The head and face are represented in larger format for more detail in comparison to the body. A standardized color legend was adopted on these non-gender specific templates. The legend and color scheme are different for the manually prepared versus digitally created maps. These maps show areas of skin, soft tissue and osseous defects, deformities, scars (correlated to either previous trauma or surgical interventions), and show where previous reconstructive efforts have been accomplished. The donor sites of graft and flap harvests for reconstruction are visually correlated (color matched) to the recipient sites for easy reference. These maps were accomplished either on plain paper with colored pencils or markers, then scanned and stored digitally, or using Photoshop™ to color on digital images.
Based on this new tool we created visual maps for the screening of potential face transplant recipients. In addition, we believe these maps will offer easy reference of any patient's previous surgical or traumatic injuries. Examples of both the hand colored and digitally created maps will be shown.
