Background:
The ASPS reported over 15.1 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2013 in the United States. [3] This number is expected to rise as plastic surgery procedures become more advanced, less invasive, and performed more on an ambulatory basis. Procedures at dedicated outpatient surgery centers have been shown to be highly profitable. [2]

In light of these data, it is clear that operating room efficiency in aesthetic plastic surgery is paramount to sustainability. This study aimed to evaluate throughput by comparing PACU stay times after elective plastic surgery procedures between a major academic institution (Main Campus) and its associated outpatient surgery center (MOSC).

Methods:
This is a retrospective chart review of self-pay patients undergoing plastic surgery procedures at Metrohealth Main Campus or Metrohealth Outpatient Surgical Center between January 1, 2011 and Dec 31, 2011. All relevant data was extracted from the electronic medical record (EPIC).

Results:
A total of 104 patients' charts were reviewed. 66 patients underwent surgery at the Main Campus location and 38 patients underwent surgery at the outpatient surgical center. There were no significant differences with respect to age or BMI between groups. With respect to intra-operative data, there was no difference between mean anesthesia time or total time spent in OR. There was a significant difference between total recovery time from arrival in PACU to discharge (p = 0.004).

Conclusion:
We found a significant reduction in time to discharge after elective plastic surgery procedures in the outpatient surgical center as compared to main campus.
