OBJECTIVE:
To compare the outcomes of breast reduction surgery between 2 similar groups of patients in regards to resident participation, time in operating room, time in facility overall, time in recovery room, amount of medication administered, incidence of nausea/vomiting, and complication rate with the only variable being site of service: a free-standing ambulatory surgery center vs. a tertiary care hospital operating room.

METHODS:
80 consecutive patients who underwent breast reduction surgery by a single surgeon at one of 2 facilities were reviewed. Demographic factors, weight of resection, type of reduction, participation of residents, time in facility, operating room and recovery room, medications administered, incidence of nausea and vomiting and post operative complications were studied.

RESULTS:
Both groups had very similar demographics, volume of resection, and procedure time. The group operated upon at the free standing ambulatory center had less time in facility, less time in the operating room, less time in the recovery room, received less medication, had lower recorded nausea/vomiting rate and less complications than a very similar group of patients operated upon at the tertiary care hospital. The estimated costs for the surgery were less at the ambulatory center.

CONCLUSIONS:
The patients experience, complication rate and cost of surgery are better when breast reduction surgery is performed in a free standing ambulatory surgery center versus a tertiary care hospital.
