Background:
University of Cincinnati Medical Center offers a resident plastic surgery clinic to patients seeking cosmetic surgery or non-surgical procedures such as Botox and Filler. Plastic surgery residents perform procedures with faculty supervision. The study goal is to report types and outcomes of surgical and non-surgical procedures performed through our resident clinic.
Methods:
A retrospective chart review was performed using electronic medical records of resident clinic patients seen from July 2015 to October 2017. Data collected includes demographics, type of procedure or surgery, and complications.
Results:
July 2015 to October 2017 there were 124 new patient evaluations and 97 non-surgical procedure visits. 137 patients were evaluated for surgery, 117 were offered surgery, and 57 patients underwent surgery. 78 total procedures were performed; 27 abdominoplasty (34.6%), 8 mastopexy (10%), 5 breast augmentation, (6%), 4 brachioplasty (5%), 4 subcutaneous mastectomy for gynecomastia (5%), 4 face lift (5%) and 4 upper blepharoplasty (5%). Less common procedures; neck lift, brow lift, thighplasty, lower blepharoplasty, bodylift, rhinoplasty, breast reduction and gluteal augmentation. There was one major complication, wound infection requiring OR debridement, and 6 minor complications; a non-occluding DVT, and 5 minor wound infections. The rate of major complications was 1.7% and 10.5% for minor complications.
Conclusions:
The resident clinic is a valuable educational experience. Residents evaluate new patients, counsel patients on surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures, formulate surgical plans, and follow patients post-operatively. The complication rate is similar to previous reported rates. It is a safe alternative for patients seeking cosmetic surgery in a more cost efficient setting.
