INTRODUCTION: The transition between residency and entering the practice of plastic surgery is extremely challenging to the young plastic surgeon. As a resident, much is taught about the art and science of plastic surgery. However, practice management is not one of the general competencies set forth by the ACGME. The purpose of this project was to develop a targeted list of negotiating points and key elements of contract law that would benefit a plastic surgery resident entering an employment agreement.
METHODS: A review of the current print and electronic literature was performed. The primary areas of interest included efficient job search techniques, comparison of employment offers, contract law basics, and benchmarking of compensation and benefit structures.
RESULTS: A list of defined terms applicable to the initiation of practice was developed through the literature review including business and contract terminology. Further, a targeted list of negotiating points was developed for discussion with a potential employer. Additionally, surgeons are provided resources to develop a team of trusted professionals who can aid in examining other aspects of an agreement such as Stark Laws, tax implications, and fringe benefits.
CONCLUSION: Our goal is to arm surgeons with a baseline understanding of employment negotiation that will enable them to fight for a just and fair contract that is reflective of their decades of hard work and dedication to the field of plastic surgery.
